What sets Kidisthenics apart?

Kidisthenics is a unique organization that helps us provide my young adult non-verbal autistic son with kindness, birthday celebrations, exercise, and friends who are also autistic and they work out in my backyard. Before Kidisthenics my son did not do well in the day programs because they were not active and expected him to go to the library or a bookstore. But this program gets him up and moving using guided exercise techniques as well as offering services that help him go out into community parks and kick around a soccer ball, ride his bike, and hike in our local parks.

This organization helped him start getting his words out as well. We have been working with Kidisthenics since Fall of 2019. Kidisthenics helps him feel part of a social community along with learning self-calming techniques to help him overcome stress. They are also helping my son use an iPad to communicate! He never used a device before.

As a parent of an ASD teen, they are not motivated by typical peer pressure to be physically fit and look “good,” and coupled with the psych meds that they take and their sedentary lifestyle, this can lead to them being overweight and unhealthy. Kidisthenics has a unique combination of ASD experience/credentials, is incredibly personable and relatable with ASD kids, and provides a unique service to get them to exercise and be physically active. This is very difficult to do with ASD kids who aren’t motivated like others and may have sensory or physical limitations that are challenging to overcome. Kidsthenics has been my son’s “personal trainer” for the last five years - they not only get him out of the house to work out, but also are very creative and mindful in incorporating upper and lower body exercises that are acceptable for him. It’s definitely not a walk in the park for them, but they are very persistent, knowledgeable, and compassionate with his needs. Kidisthenics movement specialists are not only like trusted friends, but he regards them as family.

Kidisthenics have been training my son for over two years. He has autism and is non-verbal. Kidisthenics combines experience, intuition, and creativity to help my son in ways that few others can. They designed a customized exercise regimen to develop strength, agility, and balance – all very difficult for him before Kidisthenics coaching. They recognize his various challenges and proactively help, using both verbal and visual cues, to make each session productive. When we first asked Kidisthenics to work with us, my son pushed back and did not want to participate. We were very nervous in the early days, but they took it one day at a time, started with very simple exercises, and added more complicated exercises over the weeks and months. These days, he enjoys the routines and looks forward to each session. Kidsthenics movement specialists are important members of my son’s therapy team. They bring out the best in him.
